Established in 1972, Puzzler Media (part of DC Thomson) is the UK’s largest puzzle-content creator. We produce the most comprehensive and diverse range of puzzles available in the UK and supply over half a million puzzles annually.

We are the go-to name in puzzles for consumers and clients. Consumers know us best for our comprehensive range of puzzle magazines covering crosswords, wordsearches, kriss krosses, codewords and arrowords.

Puzzler has evolved to meet the challenges of a fast-moving world and consumers can now access and fully interact with puzzles, across mobile, online and interactive TV.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Job Title: Content Editor
  • Contract Duration: 6-Month Fixed-Term Contract (The successful candidate will join us on a six-month fixed-term contract to start, with the opportunity for review and potential extension based on business needs and performance.)
  • Location: Reigate, England, United Kingdom
  • Ways of Working: Hybrid (This role is predominantly home-based, with Reigate as your contractual office base. Occasional office attendance, typically around once a month, may be required for team gatherings, collaboration, key meetings and company events.)

We are seeking a new member of our editorial team, who would be responsible for producing puzzle magazines, puzzle products and puzzle content. You will be responsible for selecting, commissioning, preparing and editing all content for your product(s). That means planning and compilation of titles, to deadline and with the utmost quality in mind. You’ll also check and correct on-page material, and that may mean proof reading or supervising proof reading. You will become one of the team who uphold Puzzler’s reputation for accuracy, integrity of puzzles and customer focus. You will take responsibility for all aspects of your content, continually improving this, and collaborating widely across the editorial team.

REQUIREMENTS

Some key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Plan each issue or job, incorporating seasonality, specific content or theming
  • Hand-compile or generate and edit puzzles
  • Commission and edit externally supplied puzzles, and commission or order artwork and photos
  • Supply all content and relevant instruction to the design resource, according to deadlines
  • Check all relevant material, including covers, obtaining any necessary in-house competition or third-party approval
  • Approve final proofs by deadline given, including all text of magazines, books, supplied pages and other works
  • Work to the schedules given and to budgets agreed
  • Maintain Puzzler’s reputation for accuracy, integrity of puzzles and customer focus
  • Take responsibility for all aspects of your content, suggesting improvements in quality, variety and workflow

To be successful in this role, you will have a superb command of English, being creative in the use of language and humour. You will need to be organised, logical, and have meticulous attention to detail. You should be educated up to A Levels (or equivalent), ideally including Maths and English. You’ll have a flexible approach, and be open to change and challenge, and have sound basic computer literacy so that you can pick up the software and systems we use easily. Most importantly, you will have an enthusiasm for and knowledge of puzzles.
