The Scots Magazine

The Scots Magazine is a glossy, monthly magazine focussed on Scotland – her People, Places, Culture and Leisure. It features some of the finest writing on all Scottish life plus stunning photography showcasing Scotland’s cities and wild spaces in all their glory.

Believed to be the oldest magazine still in publication, it was first published on 9th February 1739, as a 48-page pamphlet, priced sixpence monthly. It was edited and printed in Edinburgh.

In its present form, The Scots Magazine dates from 24th April 1924, when it was re-established by the St Andrew Society (Glasgow) as the official organ of the Scottish Societies throughout the world. DC Thomson acquired the title in 1927 and since then it has continued to be published monthly.

With a monthly average readership of over 200,000 The Scots Magazine is the world’s best-selling Scottish-interest publication. It boasts a very healthy subscription base, plus newsstand sales in Scotland, the wider UK and overseas.

It offers something for everyone: culture, history, the great outdoors – including stunning photography from some of the country’s best photographers.

In 2013, the magazine benefitted from re-design and a 50 per cent increase in size from A5 to B5 format. The change in size, which was the result of a comprehensive programme of research, gave the magazine much greater visibility on crowded magazine shelves and allowed the creative team to design a new look that showcases the best Scottish photography while preserving the magazine’s core values of authoritative, informed journalism.

The Scots Magazine conversation continues online via the brand website and social media activity. The publication is also available as a digital edition. The Scots Magazine calendar, featuring stunning photographs of Scotland’s scenery is a popular brand extension.

For Scots at home and abroad – and all those who love Scotland – The Scots Magazine captures the essence of Scotland with an attractive blend of interesting and in-depth articles.
