Job Description

DC Thomson Media’s newspapers pride themselves on their coverage of council business because they are the heartbeat of our local communities.

Local authorities are key pillars for our four daily titles – the Press and Journal, Evening Express, Courier and Evening Telegraph.

Now, as part of a partnership with the BBC, we’re looking for four outstanding reporters to join the Local Democracy Reporting team to get to the heart of politics in our areas.

We’ve been awarded contracts to provide top quality council reports from Angus and Dundee, Moray, the Highlands and Orkney.

We’re looking for people who are passionate about politics and getting to the bottom of the stories that really matter to our audiences. The successful candidates will be responsible for covering council meetings and key decisions in their area, ensuring audiences are kept informed and engaged on local democratic issues. They should provide reliable, fair, balanced and timely multimedia content on local democracy issues in their area.

We have four Local Democracy Reporter posts available – one covering Angus and Dundee councils and based in our Dundee office; one covering Highland Council and based in our Inverness office; one covering Moray and based in Elgin and the other in Orkney. The posts for the Highlands, Moray and Orkney are 0.5 FTE.

If you’re looking for a different way of life and the chance to live in some of the most picturesque parts of the UK then this role could be for you. All posts give the opportunity to live and work in large cities or towns but be within minutes of beautiful scenery, impressive mountains and world-famous coastlines.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service, which is designed to increase coverage and scrutiny of councils across the UK, is being expanded this year to include more reporters and greater coverage of local authorities.

Content produced through the scheme will appear in DC Thomson Media’s newspapers and associated websites and is also made available to other media involved in the scheme.
