Job Description

The Digital Department provides DC Thomson with an experienced and enthusiastic Digital resource that builds and maintains DC Thomson’s digital portfolio of products.

Based within the Digital Department, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to interpret creative briefs and deliver digital solutions across a range of digital products. A strong and confident communicator, with a constant flow of creative ideas, you will be able to put your expert eye for detail to good use and multi-task across various creative projects.

We will expect you to transform designs and concepts into rich, accessible User Experiences. You will work side by side with other Front End Developers, as well as Core Developers. They will look to you to provide creative input, advice on technical feasibility and ultimately code air-tight HTML, CSS and JavaScript, deploying to content management systems such as WordPress, Magento 2 and others.


Core technical skills and experience:

  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript (including vanilla JS, as well as libraries like jQuery)
  • Good understanding of PHP, ideally for WordPress development
  • Keen understanding of responsive design, and designing for multiple devices (e.g. mobile, tablet, desktop)
  • Ideally 3-5 years experience in a web development role
  • Experience using version control, e.g. Git
  • Working with REST APIs to build interfaces
  • Knowledge of CSS pre-processing, such as LESS and/or SASS (non-essential)
  • Experience developing in frameworks like React or Vue (non-essential)
  • Understanding of NodeJS, and development toolchains (non-essential)
  • Strong focus on accessibility
  • Skilled at cross-browser development and bug fixing
  • Experience in the use of graphics software, e.g. Adobe Suite (ideally PhotoShop and Illustrator)


Key responsibilities:

  • Develop high quality digital products such as websites, apps, email marketing, digital advertising, and more
  • Create dynamic, accessible user interfaces for large audiences
  • Develop plugins for enhanced functionality across the digital product suite
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, gathering requirements for digital projects
  • Design product wireframes, information architecture, user journeys and personas for intuitive user experiences
  • Maintain and optimise existing digital products for optimal performance
  • Contributing ideas and concepts for the creation and/or optimisation of future digital products
