Celebrating a landmark 65 years and 6,000 issues, Commando comics is proud to be considered the Home of Heroes and earn the title of Britain’s longest-serving war comic.

A legacy that began decades ago

Since its first publication in the summer of 1961, Commando has told tales of action and adventure with incredible black and white comic artwork and eye-catching covers. The comic’s iconic pocket-sized format tells a full story in every issue, filled with bravery, camaraderie and heart.

Honouring this momentous occasion is a special story written by historian and comedian James Holland and Al Murray. Hosts of the fantastic We Have Ways podcast, Commando is honoured to have them pen the 6,000th issue, Sweet Revenge, which is part of a set of four brand-new issues out on 8th October.

About Sweet Revenge

Framed by Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings and assault on Pegasus Bridge, the heart of the story follows Sapper James Regan and his may trials as his unit retreats to Dunkirk in 1940.

Artist Esteve Polls (Django/Zorro, The Lone Ranger) lends his expert hand to the interior comic illustrations, perfectly capturing the period details, setting and the evolving desperation of the characters, adding the necessary emotional weight such a story evokes.

Collaborating once again with James Holland, Keith Burns was the ideal candidate for cover duties. The pair worked together on Ladybird’s Expert Series World War II books, while Keith has also been a regular artist for Commando since 2019, recently completing his 50th cover.

An award-winning artist and illustrator, Keith has twice won the Aviation Painting of the Year Award.
