The world’s longest-running weekly comic, Beano, will now be produced end-to-end in-house for the first time in more than 16 years, following its comeback to DC Thomson’s print plant at Kingsway in Dundee.
Bringing editorial, production and print operations together marks a major moment for the company, highlighting its long‑term commitment to quality, efficiency and creative excellence.
To support the production of Beano, DC Thomson has invested in a sheetfed printing press, a new piece of technology currently en route from Venice. This investment reflects the company’s continued focus on strengthening in-house capabilities and expertise, further enhancing its ability to manage high-quality print production internally.
Gillian Troup, Chief Operations Officer, said: “There’s a real sense of pride in printing such an iconic title at Kingsway again, and it is a great reflection of the people behind it. By investing in our people, our technology and our print capabilities, we’re ensuring we can continue to deliver consistently high-quality products, both now and in the future.
“This achievement is the result of a true collaboration, bringing together multiple teams from across the business, and it recognises the dedication and expertise of colleagues whose efforts are central to everything we do.”
Paper for Beano will be supplied by UPM Caledonian, one of the most efficient paper mills of its kind in the world, based in North Ayrshire, underlining DC Thomson’s commitment to quality and sustainable production across the supply chain.
Producing Beano locally strengthens DC Thomson’s connection to Dundee, its community and vibrant publishing history, while continuing to support an iconic product enjoyed by audiences across the UK and beyond.
Gareth Whelan, Beano’s Publisher, said: “Bringing Beano’s print operations back to Dundee is a significant moment for us. This is where the comic started 88 years ago, and it’s still something that kids look forward to every week, just as generations have before them.
“Producing it end-to-end in one place means we can respond more quickly to what kids are enjoying and keep exploring new formats to bring Beano to life alongside the weekly comic.”
This move also positions the company for future innovation, supported by modern technology, trusted supply partners and close cross-team collaboration.
