Help us to help them

Everybody needs
good neighbours

By Stevie Gallacher

LAST YEAR, we told you about pupils from Vale of Leven Academy in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, who raised £1200 thanks to a language challenge held in their school.
This year, S1 pupils have gone one better after raising a further £2000 for our appeal.
The Language Challenge, which is run by modern languages teacher Susan Belkacemi, assesses brainy pupils’ memories. Each had to learn 10 words in a different language.
Friends and family sponsored the pupils to memorise and then recite the different words in diverse languages.

The Vale of Leven Academy first years, with teacher Susan Belkacemi and head teacher Terry Lanagan, hand over their cheque to CHAS representative Victoria.

Susan said, “We had more than 200 pupils from S1 memorising words in Japanese, Arabic, Italian, French and Spanish. All did very well.”
A fantastic total of £6000 has now been raised by Vale of Leven Academy for Robin House — and for a very good reason.
Susan explained, “They’re our neighbours. We’re the closest school to Robin House and everyone in this area is very interested in the charity.
“Everyone is willing to get themselves and their kids involved.”
This is the fourth year of the language challenge and Susan hopes it’ll be a tradition that will continue to help CHAS for years to come.
One of the pupils, Dario Santi (12) from Balloch, said, “My dad is from Italy. My class was supposed to learn some Italian, but I wasn’t allowed because I already knew some.
“I learned Arabic instead. I knew how to count from one to 10 when we did the challenge, but I’ve forgotten it all now!”
