They’re angling to be a big help

By Sarah Johnson
NEXT time you want to raise some money for CHAS, why don’t you drop them a line?
That’s what The Association of Scottish Stillwater Fisheries (ASSF) did and netted £17,400 — and we’re not codding you on!
Each year the ASSF hold a series of angling competitions to raise money for their chosen charity.
Last year, they decided Robin House was the right plaice to put their money.

Barbara Osborne, of CHAS, “catches” the £17,400 cheque from Jim Boyd and Morna Lohoar.

More than 300 anglers took part in the event, which began late last May at Morton Fishery, West Lothian, and ended in November at Loch Fitty in Fife, with each angler paying £5 to enter.
Reeled in
Fifteen fisheries were reeled in during the six-month event. Prizes were awarded at each fishery for Best Bag (most fish caught), Second Best Bag and to whoever had raised the most money in taking part.
Secretary of the ASSF, Jim Boyd said, “We’re absolutely delighted at raising this amount of money for CHAS throughout 2004. It’s a cause we should all be pitching in for.
“Our thanks must go to the 15 participating fisheries and of course the fishermen and their friends who dug so deep in their pockets to produce the high level of sponsorship.”
The Swanswater Fishery, in Stirling, held their day on July 3, raising £3200 when 29 anglers came along to try their luck. Fisherman Sean Cochrane raised the most on the day with £271.
Swanswater is a family-run business owned by Alasdair and Morna Lohoar, who is treasurer of the ASSF.
Morna said, “Jim, Richard Philp from Loch Fitty and myself made up a sub-committee organising the competition. We wanted to support a Scottish charity and thought CHAS was an excellent cause.
“Richard did all the groundwork by sending out sponsorship packs and rules.”
Modest
Morna is modest about all her hard work. She said, “It’s down to those who were fishing. They raised the money. I simply collected it.”
Jim added, “We must also thank Morrison Bowmore Distillers for their generous prizes of Bowmore Islay 12-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky and to Paul Devlin of Glasgow Angling Centre for his help with tackle prizes.
“We very much look forward to organising a further series of CHAS fishing fundraisers to take place throughout this year and full details of this will be available shortly through The Sunday Post and the ASSF website.”
Jim and Morna went fishing the other day and Barbara Osborne from CHAS was happy to take the bait — and the cheque for £17,400 was definitely the catch of the day.
Barbara said, “I am delighted to accept this cheque on behalf of CHAS. There has been so much hard work and planning to make all this possible.”
Seems we’re all hooked on CHAS!
