Robyn brings back beautiful memories
of Moyra

By Stevie Gallacher

RENA LIVINGSTON, from Castle Douglas, has been an avid supporter of our Children’s Hospice Appeal since we began nearly four years ago. She’s as delighted as anyone that Robin House is nearing completion. However, our campaign has brought back a host of memories for the retired nursery school teacher.
The first time Rena saw a picture of Robyn Watterson, she thought she recognised a child she had once taught.
Rena (80) said, “I owned and ran my own nursery back in the 1960s and we had one little child called Moyra. On the first day of nursery, I wasn’t sure what condition Moyra was suffering from. Her mother said the doctor hadn’t known and described little Moyra as a “gargoyle”.
“I thought this was a cruel and unkind description for such a lovely little girl.
Campaign
“It was only a couple of years ago when The Sunday Post’s campaign was launched that I realised Moyra must have suffered from Hurler’s Syndrome, the same as Robyn.
“Many pupils were understandably afraid of Moyra when they first met her, but once they looked past the outward appearance, they all got on very well. She was a delightful little girl. Her laughter filled the room every day.
“She stayed with my nursery from the age of three to 10 and she was a joy to have around. By the time she left she was getting quite weak which was quite difficult to see.
“The year after she left the nursery, Moyra died.”
Rena is encouraged by the new hospice though. She added, “I’m so glad it has been built. It means a lot to me and I remember little Moyra every time I hear Robin House mentioned.”
