Help us to help them

They got a kick out
of helping

By Patrick McFall
MARTIAL arts fans from the North East have helped kick our appeal closer to its target.
Members of Westhill’s Choi Kwang-Do club held a Fun Day to celebrate their 10th anniversary. Face painting, raffles and balloon games helped boost the group’s donation to £820 after a sponsored kick and punch session raised £350 last year.
Delighted

Chief instructor Violet Mackie was delighted with her charges, who range in age from five to 50-plus. The relatively new discipline has its roots in Tai Kwon-Do, but places the emphasis on self-defence and stretching.

Violet presents the cheque to Keith as the Choi Kwang-Do class give a cheer.

Violet also teaches pupils that personal development and good manners should be prized over punching prowess. Several students attending the club have co-ordination problems, and the weekly classes have helped them fight their own daily battles.
Violet said, “In our school we have people who have learning difficulties or co-ordination problems and some who are autistic.
“We can help them deal with these things, but the children in the hospice can’t do that. Raising money at the Fun Day is our way of encouraging them to do their best.”
She proudly presented a cheque for £820 to CHAS representative Keith Campbell, who helped man the CHAS stall to the tune of another £112 on the day.
