Double diamonds
work wonders for us
Margaret and Matthew were first to celebrate on April 13. Margaret quips, “It was the 13th, but it was lucky for Matthew!”
The couple, who have three sons, four grandsons, three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter, met at the start of World War 2. Margaret explains, “We both worked in William Low’s in Dundee’s old Overgate. Then I joined the WAAF and Matthew the Army.”
And it was when they were on leave that Matthew and Margaret tied the knot.
Celebrated
The couple celebrated 60 wonderful years with their family at the Dundee Hilton with a special meal and an overnight stop as their family travelled from as far away as Manchester and Aberdeen.
The Bennies only told the family they were collecting for CHAS, but when neighbours and friends gave money for their anniversary, the generous couple donated that to our cause, too.
And just round the corner, the Adams had the same idea. John and Agnes had their diamond “do” at St Peter and St Paul’s Hall with a buffet and dance for 90 friends and family. The couple met at the dancing and it wasn’t long before they were walking down the aisle on April 29, 1944.
John and Agnes were devastated to lose their eldest son, John, aged 58, last October to leukaemia.
They have another son, Jimmy, who is married to Ann, two granddaughters, three great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
John, a retired steel erector, and Agnes have a good life, enjoying at least two holidays a year in Benidorm and Portugal. John laughs, “Now you know why she stayed with me for 60 years!”
They were delighted to raise such a tremendous amount. Agnes smiles, “We read the CHAS page every Sunday and, with losing our son to leukaemia, that was where we wanted the money to go.” |
