Barnhill Primary
has weighed in
All this school year, children at the primary and nursery popped bags of pennies into a bucket in the office as they paid their dinner money.
Infant mistress Joy Taylor and senior mistress Kathleen Strachan couldn’t believe the generosity and enthusiasm of the pupils. Kathleen beams, “We aimed for the penny mile, about £800, by the end of June and reached that by Easter. Next target was £1000 and we’ve exceeded that already.
“We had to get scales and discovered that 100 pennies weigh 356 grams, which helped make counting easier. Then one mum brought in a penny machine, which was a great help, and the P7s have been counting the money every lunchtime.”
Joy laughs, “The children have been asking their mums to get change in pennies. They think that’s why everything’s priced at £3.99 and the like!”
It was P6 pupil Raquel Trabada-Smith (pictured) who contacted The Sunday Post to tell us just how much her school had raised and the school was delighted to be able to write a cheque for £1100.
They’re not going to stop there, and intend to keep collecting until the end of term and see just how much they can raise. |
