Terrified — but she jumped out of plane

By Arlene Kelly

LYNN MEAD is terrified of bungee jumping — but she was happy to jump out of a plane at 2200 feet yesterday to raise money for our hospice appeal.
As part of a group of 10 service personnel, civilians and their wives from RAF Leuchars Station Action Charity Group, Lynn, an office administrator, made a pact to risk life and limb by parachuting.

She said, “I could never bungee jump, I’d be too scared in case it pulled all my bones out of their sockets. I haven’t parachuted before either, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for ages.
“The kids are our motivation, and they make this jump mean something. There is so much riding on it, and it also means we can’t say no!”
Lynn has been involved in charity events for CHAS since learning a classmate at college in Glenrothes was a volunteer at Rachel House.
She said, “After hearing some of her stories I really admire the staff there. I don’t know how they do it. I couldn’t, so this is my way of making a contribution.”
Senior Aircraftwoman Roxanne Todd, another rookie jumper, was just as apprehensive.
She said, “This is my first jump and I keep trying to put it to the back of my mind. I suppose it will only become real when we’re actually up in the plane.
Proud
“But the proceeds are going to a great cause and I know I’ll be proud to say that was why I did it.”
Corporate Communications Officer Keith Wardlaw, who came up with the idea, is an RAF parachute instructor and physical trainer.
He’s confident the team will raise more than £1000.
The Station Action Charity Group has been running events for around four years.
Chairman, Flight Sergeant Eamonn Jenkins, said, “We support all sorts of charities.
In the last three years we have raised over £300,000 and aim to raise another £250,000 for Rachel House after seeing The Sunday Post’s campaign.
“We have decided to adopt the hospice as our main benefactor for the next two years.”
