Help us to help them

Cheers, we’re delighted to help

RHONA PERKINS, a lecturer at Edinburgh’s Telford College, works with a group of 30 catering students, all of whom have learning difficulties.
Twice a week they attend the college — one day to prepare food and the next to sell it to fellow students and lecturers in the college’s Tolbooth Cafe.

CHAS representative Pat Judge accepts the cheque — and doesn’t say no when offered a nice cup of tea — from the Telford College bakers.

Their products always include delicious soups, unusual sandwich fillings like oriental prawns, carrot cake, shortbread and their much sought-after scrumptious scones.
But last month Rhona showed them how to make yummy tablet so they could sell it to raise money for our CHAS Appeal.
The final product clearly went down a treat as, over three days of selling, the students raised a fantastic £440.
“It has been nice to see the classes working on this and enjoying it so much,” says Rhona.
“They saw the pictures of the children who are very ill and wanted to do something. They don’t relate in any way that they themselves are seriously disabled, although most have been able to understand the respite aspect of the hospice because they too have been in respite care.
“They’re delighted to have been able to help and glad to be making a difference to the lives of these children.”
