Help us to help them

Rachel House stories moved them to tears

By Arlene Kelly

A GROUP of secretaries will give our campaign a boost after being moved to tears by stories of the children’s hospice.
The Association of Secretaries now plan to donate half the proceeds of its annual fund-raising efforts to our appeal.
Margaret Morrison, president of the Glasgow branch, explained, “We often invite guest speakers from different walks of life to our meetings.
“Last August, Shona Cardle from CHAS gave us an insight into the wonderful work being done at Rachel House. By the time she was finished, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We couldn’t even manage the regular vote of thanks at the end because we were all in tears.”

The Association of Secretaries was set up 20 years ago to promote goodwill within the secretarial profession and specifically to lend support to charities.
It has 12 branches throughout the UK, including four in Scotland.
Convention
Each year they hold a convention, usually attended by around 150 people.
Margaret, who has been a secretary with Glasgow City Council for around 26 years, said, “Our convention next year is to be held in Glasgow on October 10-12.
“We have lost a few of our members over the years to cancer so we usually raise money and donate it to the Macmillan Cancer Fund.
“But after hearing about the challenge to open a second children’s hospice, we decided to do what we could.
“It was touching to hear of the experiences of the kids and the happiness they get from Rachel House.
“We were all profoundly affected and ended up donating £50 on the night. Now we have decided to split any money raised in the future between the charities.”
As well as organising collections and raffles, the association has held bring- and-buy sales, regular quiz nights and make-over evenings and has sold jewellery and candles.
They’ve even roped in their husbands to make tablet.
Plan
To kick off next year’s fund-raising they plan to hold a cheese and wine night on December 2, in Glasgow’s People’s Palace, which will be partly sponsored by the city council’s direct and care services.
The secretaries aim to sell as many tickets as possible and have already invited friends and family along.
