
DC Thomson is a long established and successful company which has
been publishing newspapers and magazines for well over 100 years.
Titles in the newspaper field are The Courier and The Evening Telegraph both
daily papers circulating in the Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth areas and national
papers the Sunday Post and the Weekly News. The company also publishes a range
of magazines for both adults and children ranging from The People’s Friend to
The Beano.
Some of our cartoon characters and animations are known across the world – from
our popular children’s comic characters Dennis and Gnasher, Desperate Dan and Minnie
the Minx to the much-loved Oor Wullie and The Broons family from the Sunday Post.
Other companies in our Group include IT business services provider brightSolid, publishers Aberdeen Journals, which produce
the Press & Journal and Evening Express in Aberdeen;
Parragon Books, a global value books
publisher based in Bath; Peter Haddock a smaller book publisher based in Bridlington;
magazine publisher This England; and the Puzzler Group the leading publisher of puzzle
magazines in the U.K. based in Surrey.
D.C. Thomson is very much a family firm and has been publishing newspapers since 1905
but the family were involved in both newspapers and shipping before the actual formation
of the company itself.
The Company was founded by William Thomson – grandfather of our current Chairman Andrew Thomson
– and his two brothers David and Frederick. It was David or D.C. [Thomson] who was asked to
run the company for the family at that time. The three Directors of the company are descendants
of our founder and other members of the Thomson family also continue to work in the business.
